The Causes of the Civil War
The Civil War had many events that led to it occurring.
Slavery in the South was very prominent. However, the North was opposed to it. They thought that it was unlawful, but the South thought that it should be completely legal everywhere in the country. Senator Stephen A. Douglas proposed a plan titled popular sovereignty, which allowed states to decide for themselves if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state.

The Underground Railroad was a major key to the buildup to the Civil War. It was a series of "safe houses" which hid slave-plantation refugees, and it enraged the South.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was another major cause of the Civil War. A vote in Kansas made slavery legal. Not everyone was pro-slavery there, though. The antislavery supporters revolted, causing the state to pass the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed the citizens of Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether or not they would allow slavery within their borders. |
There are many more causes, but I can't list them all!
